A CEREMONY is being held outside Newton Abbot town hall today, April 23, to mark St George’s Day.

The event, starting at 11am, will include recitations from the works of Browning, Brooke, Shakespeare and Kipling.

Mayor Ann Jones will be joined by fellow town councillors and other dignitaries for the celebration in Devon Square.

The annual ceremony is held to remember England’s patron saint, George, and the anniversary of his death in 303 AD.

According to legend he was a soldier in the Roman army who killed a dragon and saved a princess.
