TEIGNMOUTH'S Broadmeadow Sports Centre is 'greener' than ever.
It has recycled more than 1.5 tonnes of waste more than last year.
Latest figures showed the centre recycled 2.01 tonnes of paper, glass, plastic bottles and aluminium cans, a massive increase from the .36 tonnes the year before.
It means less carbon has been produced, and huge volumes of waste being kept out of landfill tips, said a Teignbridge Council spokesman.
The improvements follow several steps taken to help Broadmeadow increase its recycling rates.
These included providing new colour coded recycling bins in busy staff and customer areas, with separate bins for office paper, plastic bottles, mixed glass, food tins and cans, batteries, mobile phones and printer cartridges.
Cllr Kevin Lake, spokesman for environmental services, congratulated the centre on the 'tremendous results', and said the council was now looking to use the same approach at the other leisure centres.
He said: 'It sends a clear message we can always do more to improve our recycling.
'We know local people do a great job, so it is up to the council to ensure we are practising what we preach.'
