A NORMALLY peaceful Teignside village has been hit by a spate of thefts from vehicles.

Police have stepped up patrols in Bishopsteignton, and warned residents to lock their cars and remove any valuables.

And there have been similar problems in some parts of Teignmouth, particularly on the western side of the town.

The surge in the village has been over the last two months, in what the police sergeant for crime prevention in Teignbridge, Frances Bennett, described as usually a 'quiet, law abiding place where there is rarely any crime'.

'We urge all residents to be extra careful not to leave any property however small, in vehicles. It is important to ensure they are locked at all times, even if on a driveway.

'By taking these simple precautions, residents can really help us in preventing this type of crime.

'We even had an incident where somebody was advised to remove some property from their unattended vehicle, but did not do so because they believed such thefts didn't happen in Bishopsteignton. Unfortunately the next night the vehicle was broken into and the property stolen.

'This type of crime causes a great deal of expense and inconvenience to the victims. The police are increasing patrols in the area, but urge the community to contact them if they see any suspicious vehicles or people in the area.'

Sgt Bennett also emphasised that Teignbridge had very low levels of crime, and was generally a very safe place to live and visit.
