Local lifeboats and coastguard teams were kept busy over the weekend as people took to the water during the sweltering heat.

Teignmouth RNLI had four call-outs over three days, including one swimmer who needed medical attention on Sunday.

The first call-out was at 7.12pm on Friday evening when a person was reported to be in difficulty in the water near Teignmouth. On arrival the crew found that the casualty had already come ashore safely and was in the care of Dawlish Coastguard.

On Saturday at 2.47pm the crew were paged to reports of two people in the water, but before the lifeboat launched, they also made their way ashore safely.

On Sunday, just after 4pm, Teignmouth RNLI was tasked by Solent Coastguard to help search for a small inflatable carrying three young people which had disappeared from view towards Devil’s Armchair.

The lifeboat arrived on scene within minutes and the crew found the casualties safe and well, ashore in a small cove. It wasn’t safe for the lifeboat to land on the beach so it remained offshore while Torbay Coastguard Rescue Team attended to the casualties.

At 6.44pm the crew were paged again after reports of a person in difficulty in the water near Teignmouth Yacht Club.

By the time the lifeboat arrived, the casualty had already been recovered from the water and was in the care of South Western Ambulance Service paramedics and Dawlish Coastguard. After making sure no further assistance was required, the crew returned to station.

A spokesperson for Teignmouth RNLI said: “As always, we'd like to thank our volunteer crew, shore crew, HM Coastguard teams, ambulance colleagues, lifeguards and everyone involved for their swift response throughout a busy weekend.

“If you're heading to the coast this summer, please take care around the water, choose a lifeguarded beach and swim between the flags.”
