VOLUNTEERS and fundraisers at Teignmouth’s RNLI have spent a week answering shouts, raising money, demonstrating their skills and taking part in the carnival procession.

The RNLI crew were first sent on an early morning shout to reports of calls for help near Hackney Marshes at Newton Abbot.

The alarm had been raised at 6.45am on Saturday July 30.

The crew launched both lifeboats to the scene where they joined coastguards from Dawlish and Torbay to search the area.

Police also attended and used thermal imaging equipment in the search which covered the River Teign and its banks.

The search was called off several hours later and the lifeboat crew were stood down.

On Monday August 1, the crew were tasked to reports of a person calling for help in the water just off Petitor Beach in Torquay. They conducted a shoreline search between Long Quarry and Petitor beach, the last known location of the casualty and a rescue helicopter from St Mawgan was called in.

While the search was being carried out, the casualty was located safely on the shore.

As well as the emergency call outs, the crew also showed off their skills at sea by demonstrating to the crowds at Teignmouth Regatta.

Meanwhile, the fund raising team was hard at work, taking part in Teignmouth Carnival parade where they were joined by the RNLI mascot Stormy Stan as well as further bucket collections while the crew were on the water.

They crew from Teignmouth RNLI worked alongside RNLI Torbay and the RNLI Lifeguards to show how they would respond to various real-life scenarios, including paddle boarders in difficulty and an out-of-control boat in danger of harming swimmers.

The team on the ground collected £369.44 from spectators.
