A NEWTON Abbot-based building firm has scooped honours at top South West awards for a development in a neighbouring town.

Baker Estates, based at Decoy, won acclaim at the Michelmores Property Awards for its Great Court Farm development in Totnes.

The event, at the Sandy Park Conference Centre in Exeter, showcased the best projects across the region’s construction and property industry.

The company picked up the Residential Project of the Year prize for 36 units and over.

More than 500 people attended the evening’s ceremony which was hosted by actor and comedian Sally Philips.

The awards, now in their 17th year, recognised commercial, residential and heritage projects completed during 2018 across 10 categories.

Ian Baker, managing director of Baker Estates, said: ‘We are all absolutely delighted to have won this prestigious regional award.

‘It is a complete team award. So many people play a vital role in bringing a quality site to fruition.’

He added: ‘We pride ourselves on building exceptional homes in the most desirable locations throughout the South West of England. The Baker Estates’ vision is one of dedication, originality and forward thinking.’

The company is hoping this will be the first of many awards to put it on the map throughout the region.

Bob Mitchell, Baker Estates site manager at Great Court Farm, collected the award on behalf of the company.

Judges were impressed by several design factors, including the careful consideration of architectural approach in terms of massing, internal and external layouts, scale, materiality, methods of construction and attitude to context whether urban, suburban or rural.

The company had seamlessly blended five different housing types into one development giving all buyers a wide choice of property.

Baker Estates is one of the fastest-growing companies in the area, having established a workforce of 62 in just a few years.

New staff include site managers, sales, technicians, administration, finance, surveyors and marketing executives.

The outfit is currently building and selling in seven locations in the South West.
