THE owner of Retro’s nightclub in Teignmouth is hoping to open its doors seven days a week.

The watering hole in Northumberland Place has asked Teignbridge Council to change part of its license.

Chris Moulton, owner of the club, is looking to open the business from Sundays to Thursday and extend its opening times on Fridays and Saturdays until 3am.

Mr Moulton said he isn’t planning on opening up as a nightclub every day of the week but wants to have the option to cater for private events.

If Teignbridge Council give the green-light the club could open during the week from 6pm until 2am.

At a Teignbridge Council licensing meeting this morning (September 15) Mr Moulton said he would like to be able to open up on Wednesdays to provide a safe environment for people with learning difficulties to enjoy a disco.

Nearly 400 letters of objection have been sent to the district authority with only five in favour of the extended hours.

One resident, who lives close to the club, said: ‘There is enough damage and anti-social behaviour in Teignmouth without extending drinking hours so more people are intoxicated and causing more trouble in part of the town that is struggling.’

Residents are apparently already suffering from the partygoers’ antics including fights, swearing, vandalism, vomit and urine in doorways and even sexual acts in the street.

Mr Moulton, who has been in the pub and club industry for 22 years, said he proactively moves people along when his business is closing to make sure they aren’t hanging around in the neighbourhood.

And can often be seen outside clearing up fag butts and litter.

There is no proof that the people coming from Mr Moultons’ nightclub are the troublemakers and the Environment Agency found that all of the noise being made in the nightclub were in line with its requirments.

Devon and Cornwall Police have no objections with Mr Moulton’s venture.

He said: ‘I want to give the local community somewhere they can use for private events.

‘I am not looking at opening as a night club every day of the week.’

Teignbridge Council’s Licensing Committee heard everyone’s views and will make a decision soon.
