AN investigation is underway into a minor incident involving a cargo ship coming in to dock at Teignmouth.

The 90-metre UK-registered Clarity was entering the Teign Estuary on Saturday morning when it was said to have ‘bumped’ into several moorings.

The incident was captured on video and on drone footage.

A spokesman for Teignmouth Harbour Commission said the incident was relatively minor and should not have happened but required investigation to establish how it happened and to prevent future occurrences.

The port of Teignmouth has 300 shipping movements every year and is known as a challenging port to negotiate.

The spokesman said events as happened to the Clarity were now rare but Teignmouth traditionally had been know for difficulties in the past due to its moving sand bar and tight space.

She said while the incident was minor, it still required investigating.

Due process had been followed throughout the cargo ship coming into port but there were problems for about 10 minutes before she came alongside safely.

The 25,000 tonne ship, which carries general cargo, was on its way from Rotterdam when it appeared to take a wrong turn.

Dubbed the ‘Calamity’ on social media, the ship was filmed having trouble coming into the port.

The drone photo featured above, shared by Matt Pickup on social media, shows the ship coming into the estuary.
