A POPULAR character in Bovey Tracey – who once built an ice rink in the Arabian desert – has died at the age of 87.
The death of George Turner
(pictured), who lived in Cromwell’s Way, prompted a number of floral tributes to be left at his favourite park bench on the edge of the town’s park.
George, a commercial refrigeration engineer, who was known fondly as Park George, had suffered with dementia for 12 years.
He died in Torbay Hospital late last month after his condition deteriorated.
He leaves a widow Tess and three daughters – Kaye, Georgena and Dawn. A son, Nick, died suddenly last year aged just 45.
Kaye said of her father: ‘He was such a popular figure in the town. We’ve been amazed by how many people knew him and liked him. Unfortunately, because of his condition he could never remember them all.’
She said the family had been touched by the flowers left in memory of her dad who, in 2009, celebrated his and Tess’ diamond wedding anniversary.
‘Dad used to talk to everyone. I’ve been overwhelmed by people’s response,’ she said.
She added: ‘I would like to thank everyone who has been so supportive since dad’s death. Their kindness has meant so much to me.’
She recalled how her dad once went to work for a sheikh in Dubai – and ended up building an ice rink in the middle of the desert.
Her dad was also held in much affection by youngsters in the town’s primary school who would often stop their playground antics to marvel at his whistling prowess.
The funeral will be held at Bovey Tracey’s Church of St Peter, St Paul and St Thomas of Canterbury at 2pm on October 16.
