FIREFIGHTERS from Buckfastleigh were called into action on Sunday, August 23, after a large pile of tree stumps and logs caught fire.

Crew from Buckfastleigh Fire Station worked to establish a reliable water supply from a nearby open water source, using a portable pump to support firefighting operations.

Farm machinery was brought in to move the burning timber, giving crews better access to the seat of the fire and allowing them to extinguish any hotspots.

Following the incident, firefighters praised the farming community for its continued support during the recent dry conditions.

They said farmers’ machinery, local knowledge and skill can prove invaluable at countryside fires, helping crews gain access, control incidents and protect the surrounding environment.
