ONE of the youngest Black Swan cygnets in Dawlish has died, it has been confirmed.

The cygnet was one of three born to new parents Bluey and Rosie which hatched a few weeks ago.

Dawlish Waterfowl wardens said today: ‘We are saddened to confirm and share that one of the cygnets has sadly passed away.

'The remaining two cygnets, along with mum and dad, are continuing to do well and are in good form.

‘Thank you to everyone for your ongoing care and support of the waterfowl.’

Among the town’s waterfowl lovers are the owners of Pilchard Cottage.

They said: ‘It’s been a tough day for this young little family, but Rosie in particular has soldiered on, closely protecting her two cygnets and making sure that they are eating well.

‘Bluey, is also in protection mode and is highly alert to his surroundings.

‘The whole family devoured lots of tasty lettuce for elevenses this morning and greeted all of their visiting admirers.’

The successful hatching of the three cygnets was third time lucky for the parents who lost all previous eggs laid so far this year having been lost of washed away during heavy rain.

The announcement has saddened residents and visitors.

It had been reported one of the cygnets had been attacked by the dominant male Bert from the established breeding pair in Dawlish.

There was a further report of a seagull attack but the cygnet was rescued by a passerby who returned it to its parents.
