Ken Holland, of Beechwood Court, Teignmouth, writes:
I am not surprised that town councillors have been angered by the current spate of road closures in Teignmouth. I am sure that many residents are just angry, as well as utterly bemused by the lack of joined-up thinking between the various contractors.
One evening, two weeks ago, I set out to drive to Holcombe from my home just off Moor View Drive. I could not go via New Road: it was closed. I then thought Coombe Vale Road into the town centre would do: it too was closed.
Finally, Fourth Avenue and along Bitton Park Road seemed a good bet. Yes it worked, as I weaved my way through the parked cars on both sides, only to be met by a road resurfacing team outside Bitton House, and single line traffic with Stop/Go boards.
If, out of sheer frustration, I had wanted to go towards Bishopsteignton I would have had to wait at the traffic lights outside the new Morrisons entrance. I feel like I am besieged in my own town.
If our councillors have no idea why we have such a mess at the moment, what hope is there for the rest of us? Add to this the plethora of diversion signs (which have confused me even further) and information boards (which are impossible to read unless you are waiting next to them), and I admit total defeat.
Perhaps we need to adopt the scheme which some American states use: charge contractors by the day to rent road space while they dig it up. Then work is done day and night and disruption is kept to a minimum. Perhaps that's just too simple an option.
I look forward to next summer when our roads will once more be free from obstructions and we can drive around our town without disruption: in my dreams!MORE LETTERS IN OUR DIGITAL EDITION
