A MINUTE’S applause will take place before the kick off of Saturday’s Torquay United home game in memory of teenage fan Ben Oliver who died while abroad.

The tribute will take place before the 3pm start of the game against Boreham Wood at Plainmoor.

The club, of which Year 10 student Ben, from Chudleigh Knighton, was a lifelong fan, has also set up a raffle for a signed club shirt.

Proceeds from the raffle will go towards a Go Fund Me page, set up by a fellow Gulls fan and friend of Ben.

A spokesman for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development office said in a statement: ‘We are providing consular assistance to the family of a British child who has died.’

The Go Fund Me page, which was set up to raise money for a tribute to Ben at the club and to help his family, is now up to more than £3,700, far in excess of its original £500 target.

Almost 300 donations have been made to the fund which is planning to be used for a flag and plaque in Ben’s memory with the remainder going to support his family.

One contributor to the page Charlotte Daniel wrote: ‘Thoughts are with your family Ben, an utter shock to us all.

‘It was a privilege to witness that cheeky character you had as a child and to grow up together.’

Donor Rob Burkitt said: ‘Such sad news.’

Becky Wotton wrote: ‘Torquay Utd won’t be the same without you.’

Another donor said: ‘So sorry to hear of the sad loss of Ben.’

One of the club’s big supporters, Ben, who was a student at Teign School and himself a keen footballer, was said to have been ‘loved by many’.

Tickets for the Torquay Utd shirt raffle are available at £2 on the club website and it closes at 4pm on Wednesday August 31.
