THE South Devon Railway is inviting visitors to step back in time this September for a special weekend of steam, heritage and hands-on discovery.
Taking place on September 13 and 14, the Heritage Open Days promise a rare chance to explore behind the scenes at one of Devon’s most treasured attractions.
Built on the success of last year’s inaugural open day and forming part of ‘Railway 200’, the national bicentennial celebrations marking 200 years of the modern railway, the event offers an immersive experience for families, history lovers and railway enthusiasts alike.
Visitors will be able to tour the railway’s fascinating engineering workshops, where skilled craftspeople keep historic locomotives running using techniques handed down through generations.
There will be opportunities to learn about heritage skills, from traditional restoration practices to carriage care, and to watch the sights and sounds of historic trains in full operation.
Alongside the steam action, the weekend will feature a display of vintage vehicles celebrating transport through the ages, plus a photography exhibition that captures the rich history and enduring spirit of Britain’s railways.
Ernie Elsworth-Wilson, General Manager of the South Devon Railway, said: ‘Hosting a Heritage Weekend is the perfect way to celebrate Railway200 and everything it represents.
‘It allows us to open our doors and showcase the extraordinary skills and dedication that keep our historic locomotives and carriages alive.
‘We are looking forward to welcoming families, rail enthusiasts and anyone curious about our remarkable railway story,’ he added.
Tickets are now on sale, and demand is expected to be high as South Devon Railway marks this landmark year in British railway history.
