A MUSIC event with deep local roots and sparkling international connections is taking place soon in South Devon.

Award-winning international harpist Elizabeth-Jane Baldry performs and talks about some of her favourite music including works by the famous Devon-born 19th century harp maestro Elias Parish-Alvars.

Parish-Alvars was born in Teignmouth in 1808 and is one of the most famous musical sons of the town.

He enjoyed a great international career and his innovatory harp technique was admired by such iconic figures as Liszt, Mendelssohn, Berlioz and many others.

The evening will take place in The Teign Heritage Centre, Teignmouth on Friday, April 14.

It is the latest in a series of talks and events presented by the Devonshire Association Music Section, who promote three events per year profiling a wide variety of Devon Music.

The event title Harp Music from Devon and beyond reflects the style and nature of the evening.

Elizabeth-Jane will take us behind the scenes of a range of her music, talking about her favourite pieces and her instrument, with a very special focus on our local hero.

Music section chairman Paul Wilson said: ‘We feel very lucky to have Elizabeth-Jane to present this significant event for us.

‘In the intimate setting of the Teign Room it will feel like a house concert and absolutely ideal for being surrounded by all the lovely sonorities of close-up harp.’

The Teign Heritage Centre are excited to have a concert so focused on Teignmouth’s Musical heritage. A bust of Parish-Alvars is planned to adorn the stage for the event.

The event takes place on Friday, April 14, starting at 7pm in The Teign Room, Teign Heritage Centre, 29 French Street, Teignmouth, Devon TQ14 8ST.
