Bank holiday Monday saw this year's Shaldon Regatta finish on a high when the sun finally came out to greet record crowds.

With spectators braving the weather all week the bravest participant award surely goes to one Shaldon lad who took part in the regatta rowing race, despite a broken leg.

Matt Pile, 15, fractured his femur while playing football on the beach with his mates, and the leg will be in plaster for a few weeks.

But it did not stop him entering the 12 to 15 years age group rowing event, and he managed a credible second.
