BBC Radio 1 has revealed that its DJs will be taking over Devon with a series of creative events for 16 - 19 year olds.
The radio station’s Academy will include a series of special events, local engagement and face-to-face activity in the area, which begins in Teignbridge in April.
The first set of events is due to take place in Teignbridge on April 25 and will give young people the opportunity to engage with the DJs through a range of activities.
In addition to sessions, Radio 1 and BBC Learning will be offering Academy attendees the chance to apply to be part of the Big Weekend team at Powderham Castle, with work placements in areas such as broadcasting, live music and artist liaison.
More details will be revealed on the radio’s website.
On April 25, the first session will be A Day in the Life of Radio 1 which takes place at Newton Abbot’s Hannahs at Seale-Hayne and DJ Dev will be hosting a behind the scenes Q&A session.
Then on April 26 there will be a special guest Q&A with a performance from the mystery artist at Coombeshead Academy.
From April 3 - 6 Radio 1 and BBC Learning will be touring around schools and colleges letting students know about the Academy as well as giving a personal insight into working in radio.
Teignmouth Pavilions will then be home to the sessions on May 9 with Radio 1’s Annie Mac and Charlie Sloth and they will deliver very personal insights into their careers and share their knowledge of the music industry.
The pavilions will also be home to a BBC Introducing Gig with live performances from local artists Robyn Sherwell, Reigning Days and Auction for the Promise Club.
There will also be a chance for attendees to shadow staff during the set up for the gig to learn essential skills in light production, stage management and artist management.
Leader of Teignbridge Council, which gave £100,000 to help put on the Big Weekend, Cllr Jeremy Christophers said: ‘It was the work of the Academies and their enduring legacy that first attracted us to partnering with the BBC.’
Radio 1 Editor, Louise Kattenhorn, said: ‘This year’s Radio 1 Academy is shaping up to be one of the best yet.
‘There are so many amazing opportunities for young people to find out how to channel their creativity, and explore different career options, as well as showcasing their talents.’
The flagship music event that the Academy leads up to will be held at the Castle on May 28 and 29.
So far seven chart-topping acts have been announced to grace the stage including Coldplay and Ellie Goulding.
The full line-up will be announced on Monday (april 18) on the radio’s Breakfast Show with Scott Mills.
