A KINGSTEIGNTON man who survived 12 cardiac arrests, overcame bowel cancer and spent time on life support has won a £46,000 Ford Ranger Raptor in a surprise competition win.

Barry Moore, pictured, was left stunned when presenter Sean Hall from online competition company BOTB arrived unannounced at his family-run tool shop to reveal he had won the vehicle.

Waiting outside was a brand-new blue Ford Ranger Raptor – the lucky winner’s favourite colour.

‘I’ve never won anything in my life,’ said Barry, a father-of-four who has a defibrillator implanted in his chest following his cardiac arrests.

‘That’s absolutely ridiculous, and it’s in my favourite colour. It couldn’t have come at a better time. Like all businesses, everyone’s struggling at the moment’.

Barry, 62, runs a family tool business established more than 30 years ago and has faced a series of health challenges in recent years, including a battle with bowel cancer following his previous cardiac emergencies.

Yet despite everything he has endured, he remains positive and grateful to be alive.

‘There are a lot of people worse off than me, and at least I’m still here to talk about it’, he said.

Away from work, Barry is passionate about motocross, although his love of the sport has resulted in several broken bones and multiple operations over the years.

A car enthusiast, he was delighted to get behind the wheel of his new truck as Sean talked him through its features.

‘For me, cars have got to be something you enjoy driving, rather than just getting from A to B,’ he said.

However, after having time to consider his win, Barry decided the cash alternative would be more practical than keeping the vehicle.

Speaking the following day, he said: “I’m still buzzing and it was a very nice surprise.

‘I love the truck, but I’ve thought about it and I don’t need to be driving around in a £40,000 truck when I only work half a mile from my house. It’s more for being used on a farm or towing trailers’.

Instead, Barry plans to put the money towards refurbishing his home, including installing a new kitchen and ensuite bathroom.

Sean said surprising Barry had been a particularly special moment.

‘When you hear what he’s been through, from surviving 12 cardiac arrests and spending time on life support to overcoming bowel cancer, it really puts things into perspective’, he said.

‘He’s had an incredibly tough time, so being able to turn up at his workplace with the news that he’d won this amazing truck felt particularly meaningful. You could see just how shocked he was’.

Barry, who is a BOTB Pass member, is automatically entered into selected competitions and had no idea he was in the running for the prize.

He revealed he had watched countless videos of previous BOTB winners on YouTube, making his own unexpected win all the more remarkable.

Founded in 1999, BOTB says it has given prizes to more than one million people, including cars worth a combined £175 million.

For Barry, the unexpected windfall offers the chance to make improvements to his home after years of health struggles – and another reason to look forward to the future.
