NATIONAL Highways warns of congestion on major routes this August bank holiday ahead of scores of motorists flocking to the South West.
The government-owned company charged with operating, maintaining and improving roads in England is warning that roads, including the M5, A30 and A38, are likely to see heavy congestion as families set off to make the most of the three-day weekend.
Dale Hipkiss, National Network Manager at National Highways, said: ‘We anticipate the roads will be busier than usual this August Bank Holiday, with seaside resorts, airports and theme parks amongst some of the most popular destinations.
‘People heading to the South West for some last-minute sun should also check before they travel and leave plenty of extra time as routes in the region, including the M5, A30 and A38, are expected to be busier than usual’.
More than 1,200 miles of roadworks will be lifted between 6am on Friday, August 22 and 12.01am on Tuesday, August 26 in a bid to ease congestion.
In addition to this, drivers are being reminded to: Top-up fuel, oil and screen wash; rest by planning regular breaks every two hours; inspect tyres for pressure and tread and prepare for severe weather conditions.
Mr Hipkiss added that carrying out these simple checks before travelling can help drivers avoid unnecessary breakdowns and delays.
The South West comprises around 620 miles of motorway and strategic A-roads.
The region sees more than 20million extra visitors each year, chiefly during the summer.
