UP to 300 people turned out to commemorate Remembrance Day in Ashburton.

The event saw 50 wreaths laid at the town’s War Memorial representing the Armed Forces as well as primary and secondary schools, the Post Office and library.

Chairman of Ashburton Royal British Legion Martin Brooks said: ‘We had a very good turn out as we do every year.

‘We are always very well supported in the town.’

Alongside the military wreaths, there was a purple wreath in memory of animals who served and died in conflicts. The procession marched from the War Memorial to St Andrew’s Church for the Remembrance Day service.

Wreaths were also presented by Ashburton’s Brownies and Rainbows along with the Army Cadets. They were laid with wreaths representing the Royal Marines, Royal Navy, Royal Air Force and Army units.

A wreath from the Burma Star Association was also put in place. The town’s last Burma Star veteran has died but Ashburton resident Janet Everson, who had a relative who served in the Burma campaign, laid the wreath. Central Devon MP Mel Stride also sent a wreath.
