TALKING vegetables will feature in one of the humerous adverts being shown at a new community cinema.

The cinema at Ashburton Arts Centre is promising a host of special features from themed cocktails and cabaret seating to humorous adverts for local businesses.

Organisers say six ads have been shot so far with shopkeepers and staff willing to poke fun at themselves in various funny scenarios.

For the health food shop Ashburton Wholefoods, even the vegetables have joined in with stop motion dialogue between an aubergine and a potato.

Simon Rines, one of the cinema group members, explains the approach: ‘In the past when people think of community cinema, they may have an image of some rows of chairs, a wobbly tripod screen and bad sound.

‘At the arts centre we have fantastic sound, a big cinema screen and high-powered projector so we deliver a great experience on that front.

‘But we wanted to add something that the big chains can’t - a real community experience and lots of extra fun for a great night out.

‘The local shops have been brilliant; game to act out ridiculous plot lines and some of the acting is really good.

‘We’ll also have themed cocktails for each film and we’ll be creating a special environment in the arts centre to reflect the film theme.’

Simon says they offer a particular welcome for people coming on their own.

He explained: ‘What I’d say is that if, for what ever reason, you’re on your own – whether you’re new to the area and yet to make friends or whether your partner’s away or babysitting, come along – we have a table where you can meet other people and have a chat before the film.’

The first film to be screened on October 2 is The Christophers, starring Ian McKellen.

Doors open at 7pm, programme starts at 7.30pm and the film starts at 8pm.
