A HIDDEN world of art, history, culture and friendship is opening its doors to people across Teignbridge this autumn.
Arts Society Teignbridge is inviting curious minds to discover a packed programme of fascinating talks, cultural visits and social events as part of a national campaign highlighting the work of The Arts Society.
And despite its name, you don’t have to be an artist to join.
The society is part of a nationwide network of more than 300 local groups, bringing together thousands of people with a shared enthusiasm for the arts.
Across the UK and beyond, around 64,000 people are members of The Arts Society.
At Arts Society Teignbridge, members can hear from leading national and international speakers with expertise spanning an astonishing range of subjects.
From Renaissance masterpieces and magnificent country houses to fashion, film, gardens, jewellery, ceramics and contemporary design, there is plenty to spark the imagination.
But the society’s activities don’t end when the lecture does.
Members can head out on visits to museums, galleries, exhibitions and historic houses, while an active social programme provides plenty of opportunities to meet people and make new friends. Volunteers also play their part in supporting heritage conservation, education and community projects across the region.
Frances Moule, chair of Arts Society Teignbridge, says the organisation is sometimes misunderstood.
‘Many people mistakenly believe we are a group of artists’, she said.
‘Instead we enjoy talks from national and international speakers who share their experience and expertise on a range of subjects across the world of arts’, she added.
The society is now encouraging anyone with an interest in art, history, architecture, music, literature, archaeology or the decorative arts to come along and see what is on offer.
Monthly meetings are held at the Courtenay Centre in Newton Abbot, where visitors can attend a lecture as a guest before deciding whether to become a member.
