BRENDAN Cole is not just good at dancing and disagreeing with the judges on Strictly Come Dancing – he has his own show too.
That show, All Night Long, is at Torquay’s Princess Theatre tomorrow ( February 1), and Brendan creates and leads the show, with a cast of talented dancers and musicians, through a feast of Latin and ballroom treats.
He said: ‘It’s my fourth production – you could say I’m an old hat at it now – and it’s a great show with lots of talented performers. I’m very proud of it.
‘It’s obviously very tough to keep juggling rehearsals with Strictly performances but we keep on going.
‘The tour is my business, and I’m very hands-on. It’s all mine creatively, I do all the choreography and decide on casting, dancing, and music content with the musical director.’
February’s performance at Torquay will be the second leg of the tour, the first of which started in January 2017 and received rave reviews.
‘It’s full on all round entertainment,’ Brendan added. ‘We have 21 musicians and dancers on stage and it’s a powerful and magical show.
‘My leading lady, Faye Huddleston, is a phenomenal dancer and we have great chemistry on stage. Our waltz, which tells the story of an affair to a Michael Bublé track, really shows that chemistry and the power of the dance makes it a magical performance.
‘The waltz is my favourite dance as you can put real emotion into a waltz. I want my audience to cry when they watch us dance – for the right reasons of course!’
Brendan’s passion and profession has always been for Latin American and ballroom dancing.
He grew up in New Zealand, dancing from the age of six, and moved to the UK aged 18 ‘because all the big names in dance were here’.
He’s been a favourite on Strictly Come Dancing since the show’s inception in 2004, and has appeared with a celebrity partner in every series. In the first series he was matched with BBC newsreader and presenter Natasha Kaplinsky.
They went on to win the show, becoming the first ever champions. This year he was partnered with Good Morning Britain’s Charlotte Hawkins who was voted off in the fourth week.
Brendan was said to criticise the judges for not making allowances for those celebrities who’ve never danced before.
He said: ‘Despite the rumours and all that’s reported in the press we all get on fantastically well and I love being on such an incredible show. It’s an emotional show, which has had a magic about it right from the start and has definitely taken the nation by storm.
‘How often can you watch a TV show full of proper human emotion? The tears and laughter are all real. It’s family entertainment with raw emotions – people are blown away by it.
‘The magic and camaraderie of Strictly was the reason for having my own show and taking it out on tour.
‘Being out on the road you really get to see how much people appreciate it.’
Brendan said he’s really looking forward to being out on the road with All Night Long, which is running for 56 dates.
He said: ‘It’s the same people throughout the tour and we’ve all become friends and have a ball. It’s a real hoot being on the tour bus and staying in hotels together. The adrenaline on stage goes through the roof so we need to go out after the shows to come back down a bit.
‘This is the longest tour to date – 56 dates in total and two-and-a-half months on tour. Strictly is five months of six or seven days a week so I’m used to intensive work.’
Brendan is well used to sleepless nights. With wife Zoe he has a young daughter Aurelia, and another baby on the way.
