Drivers will face disruption and delays between Dawlish and Teignmouth next month when the A379 is closed overnight for maintenance and repair work.

It will be closed to traffic from 7pm until 7am, Monday to Friday, between Teignmouth Railway Station and the Shelduck Way (Sainsbury’s) roundabout near Dawlish, from Monday, October 5 until Saturday 17.

The official diversion route directs drivers back to Kingsteignton from Teignmouth or to the outskirts of Exeter from Dawlish, to continue their journeys along the A380 and A38.

A spokesperson for Devon County Highways said: “Drivers with local knowledge may use alternative routes but these will not be advertised for safety reasons.

“Access to residential properties and businesses will be facilitated by gatemen on site. Some delays may occur depending on where the contractor is working when you need to exit or access the area, as they must ensure it is safe to pass. Access for emergency vehicles will always be maintained.”

Explaining the reason for the closure, the spokesperson said: “The highway requires maintenance, and these essential repairs will help restore the surface and improve safety.”

“We will be patching, cleaning and lining the road.”
