IS there not enough rain in the sweet heavens to dampen either the spirit of the actors or the audience?
My wholehearted reply is no.
I have never seen a Shakespeare play on stage. I have tried to read Hamlet – but I’ve never reached the end.
So I went to Powderham Castle, as I have before for concerts attended by thousands, to be one of about 100 to see the Prince of Denmark in action.
We were in the courtyard of the castle where The Festival Players Theatre Company performed this masterpiece of world literature.
The all-male cast of six was playing the female roles, as was the tradition at the time.
Benjamin Way brought the troubled prince vividly to life in a way that kept us captivated throughout the performance.
The whole company appeared to relish their time on stage, each drawing us into Shakespeare’s epic tragedy.
Some brought picnic baskets and wine, but everyone was armed with chairs, coats and umbrellas as the rain stayed off for the most part.
The worst distraction was an alarm sounding in the courtyard but – as all actors know – the show had to go on.
I thoroughly enjoyed the performance, although I struggled with the language at times. But this little difficulty didn’t detract from the pleasure of the piece as I found myself sitting on the edge of my seat with the proceedings drawing to their climactic end.
Festival Players are touring – so do chase after them if you get the chance. They put on an enthralling show.
And if you don’t see them this year, then try in 2017 as they are likely to be back performing more Shakespeare.
This convert is looking forward to it.
Adieu, adieu Hamlet – remember me.
