A WOMAN was rescued by firefighters after getting an arm stuck in her car’s engine compartment in Newton Abbot. The emergency crew which answered the novel 999 drama said it was the first incident of its type they had ever dealt with. They were able to release the motorist’s limb unharmed after using their know-how on the forecourt of the Esso filling station in East Street early on Friday afternoon. It transpired the woman’s problems started at 12.30pm when she dropped the vehicle’s oil filter cap into the labyrinth of the engine’s many parts. She reached in to retrieve the tumbling cap only to find her arm would not budge. Enter the fire service whose experts on arm retrieval and navigation around engine bits allowed them to save the day. They were able to remove an air filter which gave the woman enough space to yank out her imprisoned arm. A fire spokesman admitted: ‘This was a first for us. The oil cap fell between her car’s grille and a headlight. She was not hurt.’
