A SWIMMER in her 50s died moments after being rescued by members of the public from the sea at Teignmouth last night.

The woman, who has not been named, is thought to have suffered a cardiac arrest not long after she was recovered from the water near the resort’s pier at about 8pm.

She was given CPR treatment at the scene, but was pronounced dead by a doctor in attendance.

The alarm was raised just a few minutes earlier when the woman was seen to be struggling in the water.

She was pulled on to dry land where it’s thought she then suffered a cardiac arrest just as the emergency services arrived on the scene.

Police attended the incident as did Teignmouth’s Inshore Lifeboat crew, the resort’s coastguard rescue team with colleagues from the Torbay group, and ambulance teams.

The coroner has been informed of the tragedy.

Police said this morning that next of kin were being informed.

A spokesman said there were no suspicious circumstances.
