POLICE surrounded an address in Newton Abbot this morning (fri) after a man climbed on to the roof of a property off the Ashburton Road.
As many as ten units raced to Neville Road after reports that a person in his early 20s had put himself in danger at the location.
Specially trained police negotiators were part of the response team which cordoned off the area after the alarm was raised at 10.40am.
A police spokesman said: ‘We received reports of a concern for welfare. Officers are at the scene which has been contained.’
One witness said: ‘You can’t move around the Coombeshead area. Everywhere is cordoned off. I can hear the chap on the roof shouting, presumably to the police.’
Some five police cars were parked up near the scene of the disturbance. Alongside them was a riot van, police van, two rapid response ambulance cars and four paramedics’ vehicles.
An armed response team arrived at the scene two-and-half hours into the incident, quickly followed by a team of firefighters.
The stand-off ended without incident at 1.20pm.
The young man was taken away by officers in a police van.
