SCORES of fire firefighters from across the district have been battling the blaze across two buildings in Keyberry Park, Newton Abbot, today (Sunday).

Passersby reported smoke billowing from the roof of two properties this morning.

One tweeted: ‘Grateful to our Fire Service being local and quick to respond.’

The road is closed but onlookers are watching as crews attempt to get the blaze under control.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue service has confirmed the fire was reported at 11.20am this morning and that eight fire engines from Newton Abbot, Teignmouth, Ashburton, Paignton and Torquay are working together to extinguish the fire, along with support vehicles from Ivybridge, Honiton and Bovey Tracey .

A spokesman for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: ‘The Officer in charge has confirmed a three storey property with the roof well alight.

‘Fire has now spread to the third floor of the property and has spread through the roof space to a neighbouring property.

‘Crews are currently extinguishing the fire with the use of an aerial ladder platform, two main jets, four breathing apparatus and two hose reel jets.’

Earlier this afternoon the officer in charge requested the attendance of a water carriers and four further pumps to assist.

Fire control dispatched a water carrier from Plympton, plus additional fire engines from Chagford, Dawlish, Buckfastleigh and Middlemoor.

Crews are still at work tackling the fire and Western Power are in attendance to isolate all electrics to the properties. Police are also in attendance assisting fire service.

All residents in the area have been asked to keep windows and door due to the smoke caused by the fire.
