FIRECREWS from Newton Abbot, Teignmouth, Bovey Tracey, Buckfastleigh, Dawlish and Chagford were among the 15 pumps called out a major industrial fire in Exeter today (Saturday).
The blaze at Johnsons the Cleaners in Cowley Bridge Road, Exeter, was first reported at 10.42am and has been declared a major incident by the police.
A spokesman for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue said: ’There is low hazard asbestos involved but fortunately there are no casualties.’
Cowley Bridge Road will been closed for the night although the adjacent rail line that had been closed due to a collapsed wall has been reopened by Network Rail.
Fire crews are working to stop the blaze spreading to adjacent buildings and contain the chemicals that were in the building.
People living nearby includingExeter University students at Duryard Halls have been asked to keep their windows and doors closed.
