POLICE in Teignbridge have vowed to be ‘extra vigilant’ this month in pursuit of Christmas-fuelled drink-drivers.
Senior officers warned this week that any drivers involved in a collision or whose whose sloppiness behind the wheel attracts their attention will be breathalysed.
If drug driving is suspected - which includes ‘legal highs’ - motorists may be tested at the roadside using a screening device or undergo a roadside sobriety test.
Insp Richard Pryce said: ‘Our message is always clear. Never drive while under the influence of drink or drugs.
‘Drink and drug driving is not tolerated at any time of the year but with more temptation on offer at Christmas officers will be extra vigilant.’
He said the punishments for drug driving were the same as drink driving. ‘You would not only receive a judgement from court but the ongoing consequential effects can be even more devastating in your life and that of your family,’ he warned.
‘You will have a criminal record, lose your licence and potentially your livelihood, you could spend time in prison and receive a hefty fine. More importantly, anyone chancing drink and drug driving risks causing a death or serious injury on the roads,’ he said.
He added: ‘If you know someone is driving whilst impaired report it to the police. This could save a life. If someone is drinking and driving now, call 999.
To report someone who regularly drinks and drives, email [email protected] or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.’
