The 28-year-old suspect was arrested by armed police in the Alexandra Terrace area of Teignmouth on Sunday night just minutes after the trio of attacks came to light.
Money and a knife were seized by officers after a Ford Fiesta had been trailed to the resort.
The first incident involved a hooded knifeman holding up the service station at Watcombe on the edge of Torquay just before 9pm.
Similar incidents, involving demands for takings running into hundreds of pounds, were reported at the New Golden Crown Chinese take-away in Bitton Park Road just after 9pm and the Spar shop in Higher Coombe Drive.
The man detained is currently being quizzed at Torquay Police Station’s custody centre.
He was arrested on suspicion of three robberies and driving while disqualified.
