An angry passenger allegedly threatened a surfer with a knife after being hit accidentally by his boogie board at a seaside railway station.
Sean Monger allegedly followed Jay Davidson out of Teignmouth Station and produced a knife after telling him: ‘You better watch that surf board or I will snap it in half and shove it up your arse’.
He denies carrying a knife at all and says Mr Davison and his father, who picked him up from the station, mistook a vaporiser spray for a weapon.
Monger, aged 49, of Maple Road, Exeter, denies making threats with a knife outside the station on June 11 this year.
Mr Andrew Macfarlane, prosecuting, said Monger and Jay Davison had been on the same train heading to Teignmouth on a Saturday in June when the incident started.
He said: ‘Mr Davison had a bag of clothing and a surf board and on leaving the train it is possible the board may have clipped the defendant unintentionally.
‘He left the station and CCTV shows his father’s car arriving to pick him up. As he waited for his father he was approached by Monger who said something to him.
‘He did not hear it but another witness heard the defendant say something along the lines of “You better watch that surf board or I will snap it in half and shove it up your arse”.
‘As he put the board and the clothing into his father’s car, to his alarm he saw Monger behind him with a knife which he was holding at shoulder height.
‘He seemed to be flicking the knife around. Mr Davison retreated behind the car. The defendant said “don’t you ever do that again”. Mr Davison’s father asked him what he was doing and what it was about and Monger calmly lowered the knife and walked away.
‘We say it was a very unpleasant situation which put Mr Davison and others in considerable fear he was going to he subjected to violence.’
Mr Macfarlane said Monger was arrested and told police he had never threatened anyone with a knife and the object Mr Davison and his father had seen was either a spectacles case or a vaporiser.
The trial continues.
