A LORRY driver died and another motorist was seriously injured in two separate accidents within an hour on the A38 in Teignbridge over the weekend.

A 25-year-old man from Torquay was pronounced dead at the scene when his 11-tonne HGV flipped over after losing control and smashing through a crash barrier just outside Chudleigh early on Saturday morning.

An hour later at 7.10am a 36-year-old man from Ivybridge suffered serious injuries when his van collided with the back of an HGV near Exeter racecourse.

He was ferried by Devon Air Ambulance to Derriford Hopsital with head and leg injuries.

The fatal accident happened when the Plymouth-bound HGV breached the central reservation and flipped over on the Exeter-bound carriageway where the driver was trapped in his cab.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. No other vehicles were involved.

The second collision happened a a direct result of the tragedy.

A police spokesman explained: ‘A silver Vauxhall Astra van travelling towards Plymouth was in collision with the rear of an HGV which was caught up in traffic due to the first collision.’

The driver of the HGV was not hurt.
