Only travel if it is really essential today - that’s the message from Devon County Council after one its gritting lorries overturned in icy conditions on Dartmoor.

The council posted a picture of the stricken lorry near Holne Chase with the message “one of our gritter fleet overturned on the Holne Road - driver ok. Avoid travel unless absolutely essential, do not travel to find snow, and stick to the COVID-19 guidance.’’

Members from Ashburton’s Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team, who had been placed on standby duty at their rescue centre last night, were deployed at around 4am to investigate the incident as apparently contact with the driver had been lost.

On arriving at the scene it was found that the driver had managed to make his way to a nearby house. He was assessed by a team casualty carer as having minor injuries and was able to be taken to hospital by his concerned colleagues.

The Met Office has also now issued a yellow warning for ice across the region for tomorrow (Monday, January 25) that comes into effect from midnight tonight until 11am.And if you’re planning a socially-distanced walk at Haldon Forest Park today then you will need to change your plans as the site is currently closed.According to the Park’s social media pages the site is currently closed as the ridge road has not been gritted and is compacted snow and is a severe hazard. They are hoping to re-open the car park as soon as rangers have cleared the snow and gritted and have asked the public not to park on the highway and cause more issues for themselves, the local community and the emergency services.
