A SUBSTANTIAL garden wall collapsed and blocked off a busy road in Teignmouth overnight on Wednesday.

Workmen were called in to close a section of Coombe Vale Road near its junction with Deer Park Avenue after relentless rain triggered the subsidence.

Boulders and piles of earth spilled on to the carriageway and pavement together with parts of the affected property’s garden.

A wooden garden fence barely survived the landslide, but remained intact despite its perilous state.

Work was expected to get underway yesterday (thurs) to make the immediate area safe.

No one was hurt – and diversions were set up around the local area.

One witness at the scene said: ‘The amount of rubble on the road was something to see. It was a bit of a shock really.’

Police were alerted about the drama just before 2am.

A spokesman said: ‘We were informed about the wall collapse at 1.53am. We called the highways department who had the matter in hand.’

Numerous lanes and minor roads in and around the Teignbridge area were troubled with floodwater early on Thursday, but no major accidents or difficulties were reported.
