FIREFIGHTERS responded to a 999 call at Bakers Park in Newton Abbot last night (Aug 6) where a band of travellers have set up camp.

A crew from the town were alerted after a local resident spotted flames coming from the area of the illegal encampment at the far end of the park.

It transpired the travellers had been burning rubbish without any cause for alarm.

Firefighters left the scene, assured the controlled burning did not pose a hazard.

The alarm was raised just after 10pm.
