FIREFIGHTERS battled a large heathland blaze on Dartmoor near Jurston Cross yesterday evening (Tuesday).

Fire control received multiple calls from members of the public regarding a large heathland fire on Dartmoor near Jurston cross. 

At shortly after 8pm a spokesperson said: ‘We have fire engines from Chagford, Okehampton, Torrington and Bovey Tracey in attendance alongside a water carrier from Danes Castle ( Exeter ), an all terrain vehicle from Bovey Tracey and three further 4x4 vehicles from Chagford, Okehampton and Bovey Tracey

‘Steady progress is being made tackling the 200 metre fire front using beaters, one hose reel jet, fogging units and a wildfire pump.’

In an update at 10.50pm they said: ‘The fire is now believed to be out.

‘The incident commander is beginning to scale down the appliances at the incident, two fire engines, two 4x4, the water carriers and the all terrain vehicle will remain to continue damping down hotspots, all other appliance will be leaving.
