MORE than 20 firefighters were called to deal with a suspected cell blaze at Channings Wood Prison this afternoon, (March 14).

Two pumps from Newton Abbot together with one from Torquay and the aerial platform responded to the 999 jail shout just after midday. Crews arrived to the find the ‘fire’ was already out.

It’s understood the alarm was prompted after a toilet roll was set alight and thrown into a corridor outside a cell.
