SIX fire engines were called to tackle a fire at the landfill site near Sandygate, Kingsteignton, at about 11pm last night

A spokesperson for the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: ‘Six fire appliances from Newton Abbot, Bovey Tracey, Torquay and Ashburton along with the water carrier from Torquay and the Welfare Unit from Ivybridge attended a fire involving domestic refuse at a landfill site.

‘The area involved measured approximately 200 metres by 200 metres.

‘The incident was dealt with using a blanket of compressed air foam and a mechanical digger to smother the fire with soil.

‘All appliances have now left the scene and there will be a revisit later today (Thursday) to check for hotspots.
