A DOG and person were rescued after a campervan became stranded in floods at Lower Dawlish yesterday (Monday).

Firefighters were called to Lower Dawlish Water after the campervan became stranded in a ford after heavy rainfall caused a stream to flood rapidly, trapping one of the occupants and their dog before they could safely get out of the vehicle.

It was confirmed on the 999 call that one other person was already able to get out the vehicle and to a place of safety.

A Fire control spokesperson said: ‘Suitable safety advice was given at the time of call by Fire Control for the person to remain in the vehicle and wait for our arrival.

‘Crews from Dawlish and Teignmouth were mobilised, with Dawlish crew arriving on scene within minutes of the initial call.

‘After donning water safety suits and getting equipment ready to deploy, crews were able to safely enter the water at a more shallow and calm area directly behind the vehicle, allowing them to effect the rescue of both the person and dog, uninjured, and assisted them to a place of safety.

‘Crews then made the vehicle safe before leaving duty of care with the occupants of the campervan.’
