A BAKING hot Bank Holiday weekend has been matched by one of the quietest periods ever for Newton Abbot’s firefighters.

The ready-for-action crews are experiencing an unprecedented downturn in activity.

They are now on a record seventh day without turning a wheel for a 999 shout.

‘It’s very unusual,’ admitted one finger-tapping spokesman.

He added: ‘We’ve had times when we’ve gone four or five days without an incident – but never a full six as far as I can recall. And now we are starting our seventh.’
