THE name Kim Philby evokes chilling thoughts for those who remember him as a traitor to our country. Born the year of the Titanic sinking (1912) he was considered the most successful of the infamous Cambridge 5 double-agents for the KGB, writes Viv Wilson.

Defecting to Russia in 1963, a surprising local connection with three generations of the Philby family has emerged through 9, Reed Vale, Teignmouth.

A few months ago Andy Case, an environmental consultant, his wife Rebecca and baby daughter moved into the mid-19th century property, The Lilacs, previously known as Linden Lodge.

Their search yielded a fascinating link with Kim whose paternal great-grandmother Mary occupied the house at the turn of the 20th century.
