TWO friends from Chagford will be tackling a gruelling race in support of two causes close to their hearts.

James Halsey and Isaac ‘Gabe’ Bint are in training for the renowned Two Hills Race which takes place on Bank Holiday Monday, May 26.

But the pals will be wearing ‘hot dog’ costumes.

James said: ‘We will be dressed as actual hot dogs, don’t ask why, apparently we like suffering.

'But this year, we’re doing it for something far more important than just laughs.’

James will be raising money to support a group which helps people with a rare genetic disorder called Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (Alpha-1).

James’ dad and sister are both affected by Alpha-1 which can lead to serious lung disease and liver complications and is often going undiagnosed until it’s too late.

His dad’s Alpha-1 condition reached a critical point when he needed a double lung transplant to survive.

James said: ‘Watching him go through that, the surgeries, the recovery, and the ongoing management of his health, showed me just how vital awareness, early diagnosis, and support are for families like mine.

‘There is no cure for Alpha-1, and it remains vastly underfunded and under-recognised.

‘The Alpha-1 UK Support Group offers life-changing support to families like mine and pushes for better testing, treatment, and research.’

Gabe is running for Breast Cancer Now, inspired by his mum’s strength during her experience with breast cancer, as well as the many local people both runners know who have been affected.

James explained: ‘It’s a charity that supports research and care, and it means a lot to us both.’

The renowned Chagford Two Hills Race takes place annually on the Spring bank holiday Monday.

Now in its 48th year, the race was founded in 1977 as part of the Queen’s Silver Jubilee celebrations.

It includes 1076 feet of ascent, up the hills of Meldon and Nattadon, with the notorious ‘bog’ in between. Although only 3.5 miles/5.5 km in distance the race is tough, testing even the most experienced of runner.
